ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Police said a teenager and a toddler were killed when the car they were in was involved in a crash in St. Petersburg on Friday.

According to WFTS, the single-vehicle accident occurred near the intersection of Tyrone Square Boulevard North and Norfolk Street North at about 1 p.m. Investigators determined that the driver of a Nissan Rogue was trying to overtake another vehicle when the Nissan driver lost control and crashed into a tree.

A 16-year-old boy and a 1 1/2 year-old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. Another toddler was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Police said none of the car’s six occupants was wearing a seat belt.

One of the occupants of the Nissan, 18-year-old Maliyah Waters, was arrested after the crash on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and child abuse/ aggravated battery with great bodily harm.

Police said she was not the driver, but said she was arrested because she allowed children in her care to ride in the vehicle improperly restrained.
