LAKELAND, FL – A driver died after her car was involved in a crash with a pickup truck at an intersection in Lakeland on Wednesday morning, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the Daily Ridge, the accident occurred at County Line Road and Pipkin Road West in unincorporated Lakeland sometime before 9:45 a.m.

Investigators determined that 40-year-old Lucia Morton of Plant City was driving a Chevrolet Silverado south on County Line Road when she began to make a left turn onto Pipkin Road West with a green turn arrow.

As she turned, the Silverado struck a northbound Mazda 6 driven by 20-year-old Lillian Johnson of Lakeland. The Mazda was redirected and hit a concrete utility pole on the corner of the intersection. First responders pronounced Johnson dead at the scene. Morton escaped with minor injuries. Investigators said neither driver was wearing a seat belt.

The accident shut down lanes on County Line Road and Pipkin Road West while the scene was being cleared.

It was the second deadly crash at the intersection in the past four days. A 28-year old man died after losing control of his vehicle and hitting a utility panel on Sunday. Both accidents are being investigated.
