POLK COUNTY, FL – One person was killed and another seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Polk County last week, reports The Daily Ridge.

The wreck occurred on Cypress Parkway in Poinciana shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday. Investigators determined that 29-year-old Natasha Marie Perez Cardec of St. Cloud was driving a Toyota Corolla when she tried to pass a Freightliner semi-truck and trailer. Cardec’s vehicle struck a Honda 4-door in the eastbound lane, then hit the fuel tank area of the freightliner.

The Honda, driven by 54-year-old Carlos Diaz, went off the road and landed in a ditch. The driver of a Ford Fusion swerved to avoid the crash and hit some debris, resulting in a flat tire. The driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck also tried to avoid the crash but ended up colliding with the Toyota Corolla.

Diaz, of Winter Haven, was pronounced dead after being taken to Poinciana Medical Center. Cardec was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The other three drivers were not hurt.

The incident, which shut down the roadway for about four hours, is under investigation by the The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit.
