8-year-old girl killed when car hits back of Citrus County school bus

HERNANDO FL – A collision involving a car and a school bus in Citrus County Thursday afternoon claimed the life of a young girl, reports WFLA.

The 8-year-old victim was a passenger in a car that struck the bus at the intersection of State Road 200 and East VFW Lane in Hernando just after 3 p.m. The Florida Highway Patrol said the bus had activated its red stop lights to let 30 Citrus High School students off when it was rear-ended by a sedan driven by a 75-year-old man. The driver of the car failed to stop for the bus, according to state troopers.

The 8-year-old girl was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time, the FHP said. The sedan driver and another passenger, age 10, suffered minor injuries. No injuries were reported among anyone on the school bus.

Troopers were attempting to find surveillance footage from the area that would provide additional evidence regarding what happened.
