LARGO, FL – Authorities say a man was injured when his bicycle struck a patrol vehicle with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Friday night.

According to the Tampa Bay Reporter, 29-year-old Daniel Jonathan Serrao of Largo was riding an electric mountain bike when he hit the patrol SUV in the area of Ulmerton Road and Belcher Road at about 11:22 p.m.

Deputy Christopher Lewis, on routine patrol, had stopped his Chevrolet Tahoe for a red light and had started to make a turn onto Ulmerton when the vehicle was struck by the bike in the front corner. The sheriff’s office said Serrao was crossing against a “do not walk pedestrian signal” when he hit the SUV. Investigators did not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.

Serrao was hospitalized with serious leg injuries that were not life-threatening. Lewis, 39, was not hurt in the incident.

Because they share the road, bicyclists and drivers both share responsibility to operate their vehicles safely.
