HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL – Charges have been announced in the case of a Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in a crash earlier this month.

WTSP reports 28-year-old Travis Garrett will face a charge of first-degree premeditated murder of a law enforcement officer.  Authorities say he intentionally drove into the cruiser of Master Corporal Brian LaVigne on Jan. 11. LaVigne, 54, was a 30-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and was one shift away from retirement when he died in the line of duty.

The Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office said Garrett will be prosecuted under the most serious charge in Florida law. He faces nine felony charges in all, including fleeing to elude, vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.   was due to go before a judge on Friday.
