Collision at intersection in Lakeland kills 70-year-old motorcyclist

LAKELAND, FL – Authorities say a motorcyclist died after a collision with a sport utility vehicle in Polk County on Monday afternoon.

According to the Daily Ridge, the crash occurred in the vicinity of Cherry Lane and Tower Palms Lane in Lakeland. Investigators with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of a Nissan Rouge was trying to turn from Cherry Lane onto Tower Palms Lane at about 1:30 p.m. when her vehicle hit the front of a Harley Davidson motorcycle going east on Cherry Lane. The motorcycle rider, 70-year-old Robert Black Jr. of Lakeland, was thrown from the bike and was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said he was not wearing a helmet at the time.

The SUV driver, 33-year-old Anointed Davis of Lakeland, and her son were not injured in the wreck.

Cherry Lane was shut down for about two and a half hours while the scene was being cleared. The sheriff’s office said no charges are anticipated at this time but the investigation is continuing.
