POLK COUNTY, FL – One driver was killed and another injured in a multi-vehicle collision in Polk County Friday night, according to WTSP.

The accident happened on U.S. Highway 17/92 just south of Sunny Acres Road near Davenport shortly before 8:20 p.m.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said 56-year-old Jose Flores was driving a Nissan Altima south when he tried to pass cars that were ahead of him. The Altima did not have its headlights on at the time. Flores’s vehicle slammed into a Toyota Tacoma going north, and debris from the crash struck another northbound vehicle.

Flores, of Winter Haven, was found dead at the scene. He was not wearing his seat belt, deputies said. The Toyota driver, identified as 71-year-old Samson Janvier of Orlando, was hospitalized in stable but critical condition.  The third driver was not injured.

U.S. Highway 17/92 was closed for about four hours while authorities responded to the crash scene.
