POLK CITY, FL – Two sport utility vehicles collided head-on in Polk County Friday, leaving one person dead and two others injured.

The Daily Ridge reports the accident occurred on Commonwealth Avenue near Evergreen Boulevard north of Polk City, and was reported at 3:18 p.m.

Investigators determined that 39-year-old Nicolas Roldan was driving a Toyota Highlander south when he crossed over the center line and crashed into a northbound Ford EcoSport driven by 59-year-old Angel Cano. Cano, a Valrico resident, was declared dead at the scene. A passenger in the Ford, 49-year-old Geisha Machado Corranzo of Valrico, was listed in fair condition at a nearby hospital. Roldan, a resident of Miami Beach, was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the scene, and Commonwealth Avenue was shut down for approximately three and a half hours.

The wreck remains under investigation, and as of Friday no charges had been filed.
