NORTH PORT, FL – State troopers say a suspect who was fleeing from law enforcement authorities crashed in Sarasota County early Thursday morning.

According to WWSB, the sequence of events began when 55-year-old Glen Alonzo Steele was pulled over for a traffic stop in Port Charlotte at about 1:30 a.m. The deputy who made the stop, Cpl. Brad Combs, determined that Steele had an outstanding warrant on a traffic charge.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Steele managed to escape the deputy’s attempt to place him under arrest and drove off, dragging Combs a short distance. Combs sustained minor injuries in the incident.

About a half hour later, investigators said Steele drove through a stop sign in North Port and the car went airborne across a canal before crashing into the canal bank and overturning. Steele, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was hospitalized with serious injuries.
