MANATEE COUNTY, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly moped accident on State Road 70 in Manatee County, the Bradenton Herald reports.

The FHP said a 29-year-old moped rider was headed west near 34th Street West early Sunday when an SUV hit him from behind at about 2:30 a.m.

The moped flipped from the impact and the man was thrown off the vehicle. The victim, a Bradenton resident, died of his injuries Monday at Blake Medical Center. His identity was not released.

A 52-year-old Bradenton man who was driving the SUV was not injured. No one else was in his vehicle.

State troopers said the moped rider was not wearing a helmet when the crash occurred.

The use of motorized scooters and mopeds is increasing but they can be dangerous to riders when other motorists drive carelessly.
