MULBERRY, FL – An elderly man died when his pickup truck crashed in Polk County Monday afternoon, officials said.

According to the Daily Ridge, the single-vehicle accident occurred on State Road 37 near Cameron Street in Mulberry. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said 83-year-old Alphonso Newkirk was behind the wheel of a Dodge 1500 at about 2:30 p.m. when he veered toward a ditch. The pickup hit a street sign and a concrete culvert, and went airborne. It then flipped over and ended up on its roof.

Newkirk, a Mulberry resident, was pronounced dead at the scene when first responders arrived. Investigators said he was not wearing a seat belt when the incident happened.

State Road 37 South was shut down for about three and a half hours for the investigation into the wreck.
