PLANT CITY, FL – One person was killed and two others were injured when a teenage driver crashed into a tree southwest of Lakeland Tuesday evening.

According to local reporting , the fatal crash occurred when the driver hit a speed bump and lost control on Ralston Road near County Line Road at around 11:45 p.m.

Two other teenagers, aged 18 and 19, were also in the 2004 Ford Expedition. The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the 16-year-old driver and 19-year-old were transported to South Florida Baptist Hospital.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department reported the driver was driving with a learner’s permit. Under Florida law, someone 21 or older needs to be in the front passenger seat with any driver who has only a learner’s permit.

Local authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but did report the driver was speeding prior to the crash.
