FROSTPROOF, FL – A woman and an infant were killed when their car they were riding in was struck by an Amtrak train in Polk County Thursday afternoon, according to WFLA.

The incident happened on South Scenic Highway between Livingston Lake Road and US Highway 98/27 near Frostproof at about 3:15 p.m.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said 26-year-old Kayla Cobb was trying to drive her Kia sedan around a railroad crossing arm as the train approached. She was not able to get past the railroad tracks and the train hit the car on the passenger side. Cobb’s sister, 20-year-old Shala Cobb, and Shala’s 4-month-old child were both killed in the crash. They had both been sitting in the back seat. Kayla Cobb sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. Investigators said no one in the car was properly restrained. No one on board the train was injured.

Witnesses told investigators that the warning lights were on and the crossing arm was in the down position at the time the train was approaching.
