TAMPA, FL – Police say a woman died and a 12-year-old girl was hospitalized after their car crashed into a pond in New Tampa Wednesday night, according to WFLA.

The accident happened in the vicinity of Whispering Brook Drive and Clover Pine Drive in the Pebble Creek section shortly after 7 p.m. The car went off the road, hit some trees, overturned and became partially submerged in the pond.

Police and rescue crews rushed to the scene, and helped the girl escape from the vehicle. But they were unsuccessful in their efforts to rescue the 38-year-old driver, and the woman was found dead when the car was pulled from the water.

It was not yet clear what caused the car to go off the road as police continue their investigation into the crash. The girl was taken to an area hospital.
