HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL – Authorities say a suspected drunk driver went the wrong way on a highway in Hillsborough County and was responsible for several other drivers crashing.

The Tampa Bay Times reports 28-year-old Terrence Murphy of Tampa was arrested following the series of incidents Sunday morning on Interstate 4. The Florida Highway Patrol said Murphy was driving a Dodge Journey east in the westbound lanes of the interstate and caused three crashes beginning at 6:20 a.m.

According to state troopers, one driver swerved into a barrier wall to avoid hitting Murphy’s vehicle, another collided with a vehicle while trying to move out of his path, and a third driver hit a barrier wall while attempting to evade him.

After driving for another 20 miles, Murphy was stopped by deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, who said he nearly collided with one of their vehicles. He faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, driving under the influence with property damage or personal injury, and reckless driving with property damage or personal injury.
