LAKELAND, FL – Law enforcement officials in Polk County said a young boy died after the pickup truck he was riding in crashed on Monday afternoon.

Fox 13 News reports the 8-year-old victim was in the pickup which his 63-year-old grandfather was driving on County Road 540-A East near Lakeland Highlands Road in Lakeland.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the truck, a Toyota Tundra, began swinging from side to side as it pulled a trailer filled with sod. The pickup ended up flipping onto the driver’s side, and the young boy, who had been sitting in the backseat, was partially ejected. He was pronounced dead after being airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.

The driver’s wife and another grandson, a 13-year-old, were not seriously hurt.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash.
