CLEARWATER, FL – A driver was arrested and charged in connection with a crash in Clearwater that killed a passenger in his SUV, according to Fox 13 News.

This is an update to a previous story.

Police said 36-year-old Pedro Castro of Tampa fled a traffic stop on Court Street near Missouri Avenue shortly after midnight Wednesday. He was reported to have turned the wrong way on Chestnut Street, a one-way street. Castro swerved to avoid hitting a man, lost control and crashed into a building that contained a medical practice, investigators said.

Castro’s passenger, identified as 28-year-old Sasha Hudtwalcher-Grey, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Castro is facing multiple criminal charges, including vehicular homicide and fleeing to elude law enforcement causing death. Police say he was also driving with a suspended license. He is reported to have been in prison at least twice in the past.

The owner of the medical practice estimated that about $20,00 worth of medications and supplies were lost as a result of the crash.
