FROSTPROOF, FL – A wrong-way collision between a car and a pickup truck in Polk County last Thursday night claimed the life of one of the drivers, according to the Daily Ridge.

Investigators determined that 75-year-old Everett Lucas, behind the wheel of a Ford F-450 truck pulling a trailer, was going southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 at Harvard Avenue near Frostproof. At about 8:50 p.m., his vehicle crashed head-on into a Toyota Corolla driven by 54-year-old Wendell Green. Green, of Babson Park, was found dead in his car by deputies and rescue crews.

Lucas, a resident of Niles, Michigan, was not injured in the crash. According to the report, Lucas told detectives he had just turned onto U.S. 27 prior to the accident and thought he was driving in the correct lane.

The highway was shut down to traffic in both directions for about four hours while the crash was investigated.
