News: Lakeland woman struck and killed while walking on US 98

LAKELAND, FL – A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle on a highway in Polk County late Saturday night, police said.

According to the Daily Ridge, the accident happened on US 98 North near the Interstate 4 overpass at about 10:35 p.m. Investigators said the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu, 23-year-old Oppheus Williams, was accelerating toward the intersection after the traffic light turned from red to green. The pedestrian, identified as 48-year-old Blanca Amaya of Lakeland, was attempting to cross the roadway. She stepped in front of the vehicle and was struck. First responders transported Amaya to Lakeland Regional Health, where she was pronounced dead. Williams remained at the scene.

The roadway was closed for over three hours while police were investigating the crash. The area where the incident occurred does not have a marked crosswalk for pedestrian traffic, police said.
