MANATEE COUNTY, FL – A crash sent a car into the roof of a Manatee County fire station, leaving the driver critically injured.

According to the Bradenton Herald, the accident happened on Honore Avenue in the University Park area Sunday morning shortly before 6 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of a Kia Optima was speeding when the vehicle went off the road at a curve and crashed into a culvert. The vehicle went into the air, hit a tree, and then slammed into the roof and a wall of the Southern Manatee Fire and Rescue station.

The driver, a 41-year-old Sarasota man, was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical condition. No one in the fire station was hurt.

The crash left the building with significant damage, but the structure was evaluated as being safe to use by Manatee County inspectors. Troopers were investigating whether a second vehicle may have also been involved in the crash.
