DAVENPORT, FL – A man was arrested after authorities say he left the scene of a crash in Polk County that killed a motorcyclist, according to the Lakeland Ledger.

The accident happened on U.S. Highway 27 in Davenport early Saturday morning.  The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said 28-year-old Jose Antonio Perez Jimenez was driving a Chevy Silverado truck at high speed when he failed to stop while approaching a red light.  The truck hit a Yamaha motorcycle that was stopped behind a Nissan Versa at the light. The motorcycle rider, 58-year-old Juan Santos of Davenport, was propelled into the intersection with Legacy Park Boulevard and died at the scene. The Nissan was hit by the motorcycle but the driver was not hurt.

Jimenez was located later at his Davenport home after reportedly leaving the scene on foot. The sheriff’s office said he admitted to involvement in the crash, and fled because he does not have a driver’s license.

Jimenez was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license.

The road was closed for about five hours while the scene was being cleared.
