ST. PETERSBURG, FL – A pedestrian died in an accident on 18th Avenue South in St. Petersburg Wednesday night, Fox 13 News reports.

The victim was identified by police as 54-year-old Jeffrey Francis Maurio of St. Petersburg. According to investigators, he was crossing the street near the intersection with 19th Street South at about 10:17 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound Volkswagen Passat.

Maurio was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Volkswagen remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. 

There was heavy rain at the time of the accident, according to police, who added that there were no indications that the driver was impaired.
