POLK COUNTY, FL – Authorities say a teacher was driving under the influence when she was involved in a car crash in Polk County last week.

According to WFLA, 57-year-old Kathryn Lewis is charged with DUI and DUI with property damage. Lewis is a middle school teacher at Jewett Middle Academy in Winter Haven. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said Lewis was driving a Nissan Sentra when the accident occurred in Winter Haven last Thursday at about 5:40 p.m.

Investigators said she failed to yield the right-of-way while making a left turn onto Orange Manor Drive, and collided with a Toyota Corolla. No one was injured in the crash.

The driver of the Corolla informed a Haines City police officer that Lewis was walking away from the scene. The officer caught up with her and she was subsequently placed under arrest following a field sobriety test. The sheriff’s office said Lewis admitted having consumed alcoholic beverages at a party before the accident.

The recklessness of drunk drivers puts themselves and others at risk of accidents and serious injuries. If you were injured or lost a loved one due to someone’s careless choice to drive while intoxicated, then you might be entitled to compensation.
