ST. PETERSBURG, FL – St. Petersburg police reported an accident that resulted in the death of an elderly woman in a motorized wheelchair.

The victim, 85-year-old Elaine Carrigan, passed away on Monday from injuries sustained in the Feb. 11 crash. It happened near the intersection of 1st St. N and 4th Ave N. Police said Carrigan was riding in the crosswalk with a green light and was attempting to cross 4th Ave. N when she was struck by a Chevy Silverado pickup truck. The driver of the pickup, 31-year-old Sulplicio Lopez Martinez, was trying to make a left turn onto 4th Ave. N at the time, according to investigators.

Carrigan was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. Lopez Martinez was arrested for driving without a driver’s license, and police said additional charges may be pending.
